A Citizen’s Report on the impending threats (some irreversible) on the integrity of The Cultural Landscape of Sintra protected by UNESCO.
This map illustrates the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The green area represents the Core Zone, while the pink denotes the Buffer Zone. The orange area, identified as the Transition Zone, largely overlaps with the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park (PNSC). Our report will concentrate on the Transition Zone (in orange) just north of the black line (Ribeira de Colares), which marks the boundary with the Buffer Zone (in pink). It is crucial to highlight that the reported instances of negligence and serious violations of PNSC regulations and UNESCO guidelines are occurring in close proximity to the Core of this Cultural Landscape, posing significant threats to its integrity. The three zones should not be considered in isolation but rather as an unbreakable unit.
